Complex Cases, Responsible Care
3 Questions
Dr. Gunisha Kaur, an associate professor of anesthesiology, directs that department’s Global Health Initiative and the Human Rights Impact Lab, which conducts rigorous, evidence-based, interdisciplinary research to advance the health and well-being of displaced populations.
-
1. What is the lab’s goal?
There are no clear guidelines on how to treat forcibly displaced people who have experienced trauma or violence when they cross international boundaries. Our goal is to establish the standard of care for this incredibly vulnerable population, conduct vigorous scientific investigations and share the best evidence about how to care for this population.
-
2. Why is this work necessary now?
The number of displaced people globally is rising exponentially due to climate change, war and violence. We must know how to provide responsible care to patients who have complex problems that are unfamiliar to many providers, such as chronic pain in survivors of torture.
-
3. What makes Weill Cornell Medicine a good home for the lab?
In New York City, we see a globally representative population of forcibly displaced patients. We have the Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights, a student run clinic, and a broad range of clinicians with phenomenal expertise at Weill Cornell Medicine whom we can mobilize in complex patient cases to provide incredible medical care.
